"Co-Splay" Breast-Plate 001 (Invert 050)
Ink + Graphite on Paper / Composite Photograph
24in x 24in

This Breast-Plate explores the fluid construction of gender identities spanning time and place. The donning of armour, specifically the Breast-Plate, was once a crucial preparation for warfare, and in former times functioned as a masculine rite of passage. In contemporary workings of the word “Breast-Plate,” the donner or “user” can engage in shape-shifting co-splay with such a device. Thus, one can invert its former aggressive, militaristic usage towards new, transformative states of “becoming.”
